I was recently contacted by an interested individual who is researching the difference in Melaleuca and Shaklee.net/go (referred to as Shak). She says, based on her research, both companies have the same claims about purity, safety, testing, studies, ect. Melaleuca's been in business 25 years and Shak for 50 years. The only drastic difference she has noticed is the cost. Her question: if both companies claim the same thing then why is the cost so different? Melaleuca is apparently much cheaper.

My Response:

Per your request, I have been working to get additional information as to the difference in price between Shak and Melaleuca. My suspicion is the difference in quality.

Shak products have peer-reviewed published clinical proof of safety & efficacy and this proof is easily located. Challenge Melaleuca or any other companies to provide a list of their published research (in accredited scientific journals). As a medical technologist, I was not receptive to supplementation - felt that if I needed vitamins, my internist would order them. The only reason my good friend, Janey convinced me to take 3 Tbsp. When I started supplementation in 1976 my symptoms included: an irregular heart beat due to virus pneumonia in 1943, which damaged my heart wall (spent 1943-45 on complete bed rest); constant headaches, extreme fatigue, severe allergies, a bald spot four inches by two inches on the back of my head, eight breast tumors in eight years, abnormal Pap Smear, constant back pain due to an injury in 1949, bleeding eczema on my right palm, psoriasis on scalp and knees.

In two weeks my hand was healing (I thought from using Basic Cleaner); my headaches were going away; I could breathe through my nose; my energy level improved! Miracles were happening! I started researching the role nutrition played in our bodies. Shak became a way of life.

Pregnancy Question and Answer from Dr. Chris Jensen

On the subject of dietary supplements during pregnancy and lactation, I want to clarify that Vita-Lea can and is used by thousands of consumers as a prenatal supplement.

Often people are under the mistaken impression that pregnancy or lactation requires a completely different multivitamin and mineral supplement. In point of fact, this isn't the case. Nutritional needs are increased during pregnancy and lactation, but the value of a balanced and comprehensive nutritional supplement like Vita-Lea is that it complements an individual's food intake to help ensure that all nutrient needs are met.

Also, for those women whose physicians recommend additional iron beyond the 18 mg provided in a two table serving of Vita-Lea, our Iron plus Vitamin C formulation is an excellent product to consider.

Some points to keep in mind with regard to Shaklee nutritional supplements during pregnancy and lactation are as follows: Vita-Lea serves as an excellent prenatal supplement.

It's especially important to get sufficient amounts of the B vitamin folic acid even before you get pregnant, to help reduce the risk of your baby having a common type of birth defect. Folic acid is found in Vita-Lea and B-Complex.

Calcium needs increase during pregnancy and lactation. The RDA during pregnancy and lactation is 1200 mg daily, and any of our four calcium supplements serve as excellent supplementary sources. Remember also that a serving of a dairy product, like milk or yogurt, provides about 200-300 mg of calcium.

Some women require supplementary iron during pregnancy. A blood test by your doctor can determine if this applies to you. Shaklee Iron plus Vitamin C serves as an excellent source of additional iron for those in need.

Protein needs during pregnancy increase only slightly, and most Americans get plenty of protein. Therefore, supplementary protein is usually not required. However, most Americans could benefit from healthier sources of protein. Shaklee Energizing Soy Protein can be used as a high quality, low-fat, cholesterol-free alternative to traditional high-fat, high-cholesterol protein sources. For example, many people enjoy Energizing Soy Protein in the morning as a part of breakfast in place of the more traditional protein sources such as eggs and bacon.

A diet rich in vitamin C helps promote absorption of iron. Vitamin C with each meal makes good sense. As indicated by the information above, a basic supplementation regimen is fine during pregnancy and lactation. On the other hand, as a general rule, use of medicinal herbs, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, and prescription medicines is not recommended during pregnancy and lactation unless you have first cleared this with your physician. Small amounts of other herbs like garlic and alfalfa should not pose a problem.

All of us at Shaklee are devastated by the disaster that began as an earthquake on Sunday and spread through a series of Tsunamis to cause the loss of what authorities say could exceed 100,000 lives in one of the world's worst natural disasters. Our hearts go out to all of the people who lost family members and to the communities around the world who have suffered so much tragedy. We are also very grateful that at this point, it does not appear that any member of our Shaklee Family in Malaysia has been lost.

It is the Shaklee way to do more than express our sympathy and condolences. We must help. And so we have organized a way for all of our Shaklee Members to provide much needed supplies to the victims of this disaster through our non-profit, charitable organization Shaklee Cares.

This is one of a number of substances classified as an amino sugar. Unlike other forms of sugar in the body, amino sugars are components of carbohydrates that are incorporated into the structure of body tissues, rather than being used as a source of energy. Glucosamine is thus involved in the formation of the nails, tendons, skin, eyes, bones, ligaments, and heart valves. It also plays a role in the mucous secretions of the digestive, respiratory, and urinary tracts.

Glucosamine is made in the body from the simple carbohydrate glucose and the amino acid glutamine. It is found in high concentrations in joint structures. It is also available as a supplement, in the form of glucosamine sulfate, which helps to combat both the causes and symptoms of osteoarthritis. Glucosamine has been proven in over 300 studies and 20 clinical trials to actually build joint cartilage. It can also slightly reduce the destruction of cartilage and depression caused by taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), which are commonly prescribed for people with arthritis.
